Mary Wollstonecraft was a famous 18th century feminist and social advocate. In this essay, she argues for basic gender equality and education, going so far as to call forced reliance on men during that time a form of legal prostitution. A Modest Proposal is a satirical work meant to call attention to the plight of the Irish people under the oppression of the British government. Swift purposefully takes the argument too far in order to make his point about apathy towards to destitute (he suggests all poor families sell their children to the English).  Suggested Level: US (Upper Secondary)
